Classical Education vs. STEM

Each student’s educational journey rests on the instructional approach they receive, whether it is based on a classical education approach or one that is more narrowly focused. Two prevalent educational strategies in the United States today are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Liberal Arts. Graduates of a Liberal Arts focused curriculum possess well-rounded knowledge in the subjects that reflect all aspects of our culture, past, and present. Graduates of a STEM approach possess a highly focused, integrated education in technology and the physical sciences. The choice between schools which focus on these two very different educational philosophies directly impacts the exposure and, thus, future career prospects for each student. Philosophy | Classical vs. STEM Liberal Arts study derived from classical education focuses on investigating concepts and issues that transcend the confines of any one discipline. Through the exploration of arts, humanities, physical

The two coaches on the court at Thursday’s 3A Tri-Peaks volleyball match between Vanguard and St. Mary’s may have only recently returned to girls’ volleyball, but their resumes speak for themselves. With more than 500 combined match wins and 10 state championships, David Barkley and Andrew Soeldner returned this season after taking time off from girls’ volleyball. Barkley retired from coaching in January 2018, after 15 seasons and six state championships with Cheyenne Mountain. But after about a year away from the court, he was approached by a family friend about the opening at St. Mary’s. Barkley initially said no. “Not unless there is an opening in the English department,â€ Barkley told Nancy Kellick, the Pirates’ C-team coach and mother of junior middle Jillian Kellick. Two days later, one opened up. “It wasn’t forced, it was a real opening, so I applied,â€ Barkley said. “I coach for the same reason wherever I am. These are some great k

What Is Classical Education?

Classical education is an approach to learning that takes the whole individual into context. It teaches students how to learn and use reason to ultimately make informed decisions later in life. This whole-person approach is accomplished by introducing disciplinary themes among the backdrop of history. So while a student is learning to sift through historical events, they can integrate concurrently evolving theories and facts in mathematics, science, the arts, and literature. Knowledge of one subject always has a connection and role to play in another subject. The difference between classical education and curriculums often found in traditional public institutions is the importance placed on the act of learning. Classical education strives to develop a student into a disciplined and robust thinker able to parse information, ask essential questions, and ultimately form their own well-reasoned opinions and contributions to the Great Conversation of humanity. The concept of Classical Education is not a new one. In the face of new curricular trends, Classical Education has endured because of its foundation educating wisdom and virtue. This article will explore the principles and benefits of Classical Education and demonstrate why its approach continues to persist as a successful foundational model for shaping students’ minds in a holistic way. Classical Education Builds A Strong Academic Foundation: The Three Stages of Classical Education The classical approach relies on the Trivium (or the three stages) of language: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Each stage builds on the former, and focuses on developmentally appropriate approaches to learning. Grammar (Grades K-5) During the years when children learn quickly through rhyme and melody, basic facts in all major subject areas serve as a foundation upon which to build in later stages. Logic (Grades 6-8) During these years, students cultivate their increasing interest in argument by studying logi

Cheyenne Mountain’s Javonte Johnson, Vanguard’s Nique Clifford ride mantra to college basketball scholarships

COLORADO SPRINGS – article by Vinny Benedetto, Gazette Preps Javonte Johnson pulled up and called his shot as a freshman at Cheyenne Mountain. During the year he averaged 5.7 points per game for the Indians’ 9-16 varsity basketball team, Johnson watched guys like Sand Creek’s D’Shawn Schwartz, Vista Ridge’s Hunter Maldonado and Sierra’s CJ Jennings run the Colorado Springs prep basketball scene and accept college scholarships to Colorado, Wyoming and West Texas A&M, respectively. Johnson wanted the same. To give some permanence to his efforts, he coined the phrase “On Top Next.â€ He soon recruited a friend and teammate from elementary school, who happened to be another budding prospect, to join the basketball collective. Johnson and 麻豆官网’s Nique Clifford still include the “OTNâ€ acronym in their twitter handles as they head into their senior year. “It’s definitely helped me and Javonte a lot,â€ Clifford said. “I keep remembering that’s what we’re striving for. Peak Perfomer of the Week: Aliyah Moya, 麻豆官网 girls’ soccer

BY CHHUN SUN, The Gazette Aliyah Moya has one thing on her mind when she steps onto the field for 麻豆官网 girls’ soccer team, and that’s to score goals. “I can’t do this without my team,” she said. “My team looks and finds me, and somehow I’m always there at the right place, the right time.” But her mindset isn’t just limited to individual achievements. The junior striker also want to help her teammates make history. The Coursers have not made the state playoffs since the program’s inception in 2009. But that could change this year, especially with Moya around. In wins over Colorado Springs School, Florence and Lamar, Moya tallied six goals and one hat trick — enough to land her this week’s The Gazette Preps Peak Performer. And she’s showing no signs of slowing down, evidenced by her season-high four goals in a 5-0 win over Pueblo Central on Monday. “She always has the mindset to score,” Vanguard coach Rachel Francis said. Dynasty locked: Vanguard clinches fourth straight 3A boys’ volleyball championship

CENTENNIAL – When 麻豆官网 coach Andrew Soeldner held the school’s first boys’ volleyball practice six years ago, he asked the team who had played organized volleyball before signing up. “No one raised their hands,â€ Soeldner said. Saturday, Vanguard defeated Faith Christian for the championship 2-0 (25-15, 25-18) for the program’s fourth consecutive title, increasing its unbelievable 3A winning streak to 90 matches. Soeldner said celebrating their fourth title felt just as good as the first, but he went through an emotional journey throughout the day. “The first time was great because it was new, we were all working together, we were figuring it out, but this time they are my family,â€ Soeldner said. “I’ve known them all for five years now and then there’s this sadness throughout the whole day, knowing and counting down – 150 points left, 100 points left, 50

Vanguard boys’ volleyball to battle for fourth consecutive state club title

The decision to add boys’ volleyball as a Colorado high school sanctioned sport has been decades in the making. But while the debate raged on at the Colorado High School Activities Association, one school was building a boys’ volleyball dynasty in Colorado Springs. This weekend 麻豆官网 will compete for its fourth straight Colorado 3A state championship – this time with more eyes than ever on the growing sport. Just two weeks ago, CHSAA approved boys’ volleyball as a sanctioned sport starting the 2020-21 school year, making this year’s state tournament the first of its kind as a pilot program, and a glimpse into what the sport will look like under CHSAA’s umbrella in spring 2021. Vanguard, which has an enrollment of just 305 according to the latest CHSAA numbers, began a boys’ volleyball club program six years ago. The Coursers made it to the state finals in their second year and won three consecutive after that – including two undefeated seasons. “For some reason this really tiny school j
