On the morning of March 12, 2024, Shen Huazhong, a fisherman from Daishan, Zhoushan, was setting crab traps in the Yangtze River estuary fishing grounds aboard his fishing vessel, Zhe Dai Yu 11492. Just as the more than 6,000 traps entered the sea, thick smoke rose about three kilometers away, accompanied by an orange signal. Based on his experience, he judged it to be a distress call. The crab traps were dragging the boat and couldn't move; a normal retrieval would take at least two to three hours. In March, the seawater was only in the teens Celsius; prolonged exposure would cause hypothermia, and they couldn't afford to wait. In this critical moment, Shen Huazhong ordered all the ropes to be cut and proceeded at full speed. With each cut, crab traps worth approximately 400,000 yuan sank into the sea. He didn't care about the cost; he only wanted to get there as quickly as possible. Upon arrival, there were 15 people crammed into the lifeboat, and one more person was floating nearby. He and his crew worked together to rescue all 16 people in distress.

Cutting through a 400,000 yuan crab trap saves 16 lives.

Some people lamented the loss of 400,000 yuan, calling him foolish for cutting it off so easily. Shen Huazhong simply waved his hand: "Money can be earned back, but once people are gone, everything is lost." He wasn't a hero, just an ordinary fisherman. The sea is unpredictable, and fishermen have always been brothers. Two years ago, he had also cut a crab trap to save lives, and this time, he didn't hesitate for a moment. The trap represented half a lifetime's savings, but it couldn't outweigh the lives at stake. Afterwards, he bought new crab traps. What he cut off was money that could be earned again, but what he saved were sixteen lives that would never have a second chance.

Interview video of Shen Huazhong after saving people

The video begins on a wet deck, with ropes being cut one by one. The camera then cuts to surging waves, thick smoke, and orange life jackets crammed into lifeboats, the faces of those in the water turning purple. Inside the cabin, Shen Huazhong, holding a walkie-talkie, orders the boat to move forward. The video ends back in port, with only broken ropes and empty spaces on the deck; he still says that money can be earned again. The video doesn't rely on sentimentality to clearly convey this choice.
